In early 1960 my father was forced to flee Cuba due to the takeover of Fidel Castro. My father flew directly to NYC with only a couple of dollars and what fit in a small suitcase. Several days after arriving in NYC he bumped into an old friend had already been residing in NY. His friend asked him out to lunch and proposed a specific time to meet. My father graciously accepted but warned him that he might be late since he didn’t even own a watch. His friend graciously removed his watch and gave to my father saying that it was his and from now on he will know what time it was. My father used this watch for several years but eventually it stopped working. For many years it sat in my fathers dresser and I would stare and play with it until one day i mustered up the courage to ask him if I could have it. He said yes and at this time is when he shared the story behind the watch. I had the watch overhauled in the late 80’s and it has worked perfectly ever since. It is the only watch in my collection I will never sell and I wear it every year for Father’s Day and special family occasions including his annual mass remembering his passing. Every time I wear it I feel a connection with my dad whom I miss very much.
