At the age of 80 years old my grandfather passed away from the results of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. This was nearly 10 years ago. While going through some of my grandpa’s old things I came across a box of watches, most of which were uninteresting quartz, but one stuck out to me. It was a 1972 Heuer Autavia GMT Ref. 1163 Mark 2. Having just got into watches a year prior, I was over the moon to discover such a watch amongst my grandpa’s things. This was also found on my mothers birthday, and with her being born in 1972, it’s hard not to imagine this being a birth year watch bought in celebration of his first daughter being born. Much about the watch remains a mystery, as my grandpa died long before we were able to talk about it, but it remains a treasure I look forward to passing down to my son someday.
